Storyboarding & illuminated experiences

The storyboard practice of Michael Darius: sequence, rhythm, composition, words, and pictures.

A story begins
before its first page.

I

Storyboarding

Finding the sequence of a story: what we see, what we feel, and what comes next. Composition and rhythm, one frame at a time.

II

Children’s stories

Words and pictures composed together. Making room for curiosity, quiet, and the discoveries that happen between one page and the next.

III

Illuminated experiences

Illustration, ornament, and typography share the page. The character of each story guides its visual language.

The practice

From the first frame
to the whole experience.

  1. Find the story

Begin with the idea, the intended reader, and what the story wants to say.

  2. Shape the sequence

Work through scenes, composition, pacing, and transitions in a storyboard.

  3. Give the page its character

Bring text, art, space, and movement into a shared composition.

  4. Read it as a whole

Return to the experience, revise, and let the story find its rhythm.

The Storybook Instrument uses our own storyboard format, designed to support different stories and visual treatments. The format carries the work; each story can have a language of its own.
